No time to energize?! We have had some fun and put together a series of videos to give you some simple tips to create better, healthy energy in just minutes or even seconds a day! Keep a look out on our website as we add the videos, just scroll down a ways! Here is to good health and energy, whether you are 25 or 95!
You can do it on a plane, on the bus, in a car, standing up, sitting down, even while you are still in bed (lazzzzy!)
WIGGLE your fingers and toes while you count to 100 !! for extra fun do it with your kids or grandkids! finish with a nice big stretch. You will be surprised the muscles you are using in your fingers, hands, arms, toes, feet, calves...creating ENERGY!! (good reference - "Aging Backwards" by Miranda Esmonde-White)
SNIFF COFFEE !! Not a coffee drinker ...just the aroma of coffee beans can alter the activity of genes in the brain and get us going !
MOVE fast for 20 seconds every day ! Just move very quickly, like running on the spot moving your arms and legs for 20 seconds, THAT'S IT ! just count to 20 and MOVE ! We personally like to lie flat on the floor, legs straight up and pump the legs like we are riding a bike, very fast, and don't forget to move the arms, it seems crazy, looks a bit funny, but it works, ENERGY BOOST! Can you find 20 seconds...very little effort! (good reference...Dr. Christiane Northup's "Glorious Women Never Age").
The Dalai Lama suggests, and we concur, "Once a year, go someplace you have never been before." At least once a year !!
PLACES ! MARKETS ! RESTAURANTS ! FOOD !
Collect Many Experiences ! Not Stuff !
A time to recharge ! Take the vacation ! Remember Paris is not a city, nor is India a country -- they are experiences ...to widen our horizons, fulfill our human potential, to re-energize and make us happier !
Be a traveler, not just a tourist ! A relaxing beach, a backpacking adventure, checking off "A 1000 Places to See Before You Die", just go!
CAT NAP! Researchers say that taking a "cat nap" or "power nap" during the day can make up for lack of nighttime sleep and can improve alertness, performance and mood! Go ahead take that nap...relax, recoup and regroup!
RIDE A BIKE ! But let's try one of those E-assist electric bikes! We both have one and they are fantastic! Lazy ?? Maybe, but it makes getting out and moving more of a possibility for all ages, for those who may have mobility issues or disabilities, bad knees, aching hips, or just want to ride further and not worry about the hills!!
REHYDRATE AND REFUEL. Most of us wake up dehydrated, which adds to fatigue. Having that glass of water and eating breakfast within an hour or so of waking will make you feel more alert and boost your cognitive performance and energy!
LAUNCH yourself out of bed in the morning, when the alarm goes off, do not hit the snooze button, instead immediately count backwards from 5... 5.4.3.2.1 and launch yourself out of bed ! Darn if it doesn't work every time ! (good resource..."The 5 Second Rule " by Mel Robbins).
GO OUT on the balcony, the deck or the porch. Natural light (even in very cold weather!) calibrates your body's clock for the rest of the day and that makes for a better day!
SLEEP MORE ! Go to bed earlier. Depriving yourself of sleep, even though it seems like a good time late at night while the house is quiet to get things done, inhibits the brain function and reduces energy. We want more energy !
DANCE ! "like nobody is watching"! Turn the music up loud, put in your earbuds and turn it up... while you are doing your housework, or you have been sitting too long, get up from the couch or your desk if you are working from home, just get up and dance around the house for 3 minutes!
AVOID MULTITASKING ! Be present, focus on just one thing, do it right, get it done and when it is done, move on to the next, as you move along in your day, BEING PRESENT, you will feel ENERGIZED!!
POWER BREATHING! Try some noisy power breathing ! The Bellows Breath involves inhaling and exhaling quickly and evenly through your nose. It will make you feel invigorated as if you just finished a workout ! And only takes 2 minutes! P.S. we thought Guru Nanda could demonstrate better than us on this one !
WALK! And take the stairs ! Our Dad, up until he died at 94, walked every day, always took the stairs and took pride in the fact that he could run up them! We know these are old standards, but just too many benefits not to mention. Simply choosing to walk each day (even if it means putting in a walking exercise DVD or turning on some music and just walking on the spot in your house) can improve your mood, your balance and coordination, and strengthen your bones and muscles.
GO OUTSIDE and walk or stand barefoot on the earth! So simple, and the energy is delivered to us! We don't do this enough, try it for 10 minutes each day. (good resources... look up Grounding or Earthing)
PREPARE a new, tasty and simple food dish for supper tonight. How about trying a healthy veggie dish and then take a MOMENT after you have prepared it and see how you feel !
MEDITATION. Now this is a big one and energizes like crazy! Any length of meditation at least once a day. It does not have to be 1 hour or even 1/2 an hour, it can be as simple as stopping, closing your eyes, taking a couple of deep breaths and quieting your mind! It is amazing how it returns your energy flow and makes you more productive. (good resource... Deepak Chopra, Chopra Center Meditation).
